    Abstract

    Society as a whole is increasingly exposed and vulnerable to natural disasters because extreme weather events, exacerbated by climate change, are becoming more frequent and longer. To increase the resilience of European citizens and assets to natural disaster we propose I-REACT: Improving Resilience to Emergencies through Advanced Cyber Technologies. The proposed system targets public administration authorities, private companies, as well as citizens in order to provide increased resilience to natural disasters though better analysis and anticipation, effective and fast emergency response, increased awareness and citizen engagement. I-REACT integrates existing services, both local and European, into a platform that supports the entire emergency management cycle. Leveraging on innovative cyber technologies and ICT systems, I-REACT will be able to enable early planning of disaster risk reduction actions, achieve effective preparedness thanks to risk assessment and early warnings, and efficiently manage emergency responses by empowering first-responders with up-to-date situational information and by engaging citizens through crowdsourcing approaches and social media analysis. I-REACT will integrate multiple systems and European assets, including the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS), the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), and European Global Navigation Satellite Systems (E-GNSS), e.g. Galileo and EGNOS.I-REACT will be structured as a user-driven project, integrating the requirements from all main stakeholders as well as the guidelines that emerged during European workshops and seminars related to emergency management. I-REACT services will also enable new business development opportunities around natural disasters triggered by extreme weather conditions, which will reduce the number of affected people and loss of life, lowering the environmental and economic costs due to damaged assets within society.

  • ONTIC - ONLINE NETWORK TRAFFIC CHARACTERIZATION, (2014-2017) - Responsabile Scientifico

    Abstract

    Accurate identification and categorization of network traffic is a crucial task in many network management and engineering activities, such as QoS evaluation, capacity planning and attack detection. Terabytes of data may be transferred through the core network of a typical ISP every day, and an exponential growth in traffic is expected in the short-term, with more than 50 billions of Internet-connected devices. This scenario represents a tough challenge for network data capture and analysis. An accurate and massively scalable platform for both online and offline characterization of network traffic pattern evolution is a key element in facing the challenge. Top applications benefitting from such a platform include proactive congestion control mechanisms and intrusion detection systems.To this end, the ONTIC project proposes to design, develop and evaluate:1) A novel architecture of massively-scalable online techniques able to (a) characterize network traffic data streams, identifying traffic pattern evolutions, and (b) proactively detect anomalies in real time at very high network speeds, i.e., hundreds of thousands of packets per second.2) An innovative set of massively-scalable offline data mining techniques to characterize network traffic, exploiting big-data analytic approaches and cloud-based distributed computation paradigms on extremely large network traffic datasets.ONTIC will integrate these techniques into an autonomous network traffic characterization platform, to be used as cornerstone of a new generation of scalable and proactive network management and analysis applications.Dissemination and adoption of project outcomes in other application domains (e.g. bioinformatics, medicine, physics, social sciences, and finances) will be fostered by releasing the code and documentation of the ONTIC framework to the public by means of popular open-source repositories.

    Abstract

    The ubiquity of Internet access, and the wide variety of Internet-enabled devices and applications, have made the Internet a principal pillar of the Information Society. Decentralized and diverse, the Internet is resilient and universal. However, its distributed nature leads to operational brittleness and difficulty in identifying and tracking the root causes of performance and availability issues. The first step to improve this situation is measurement: illuminating the currently obscure dynamics of the Internet. To address this, we advocate a measurement plane, or mPlane alongside the Internet's data and control planes.mPlane consists of a Distributed Measurement Infrastructure to perform active, passive and hybrid measurements; it operates at a wide variety of scales and dynamically supports new functionality. A Repository and Analysis layer collects, stores, and analyses the collected data via parallel processing and data mining. Finally, an Intelligent Reasoner iteratively drills down into the cause of an evidence, determining the conditions leading to given issues, and supporting the understanding of problem origins.By enabling pervasive measurement throughout the Internet, mPlane benefits everyone: ISPs get a fine-grained picture of the network status, empowering effective management and operation. Application providers gain powerful tools for handling performance issues of their application. Regulators and end-users can verify adherence to SLAs, even when these involve many parties. Customers of all kinds can objectively compare network performance, improving competition in the market.mPlane will significantly advance the state of the art in Internet measurement, from innovative probe technology to intelligent algorithms for distributed data analysis. The development of the Reasoner is a key result that will allow structured, iterative, automated analysis. An emphasis on open, standard interfaces will speed adoption and increase the impact of the project.
