Using images from space for relief efforts in crisis areas

The MASAI project (Map for damage Assessment with Satellite Artificial Intelligence), funded by the European Space Agency - ESA, supports humanitarian organizations by developing technologies based on the use of satellite images (RADAR and VHR) and their processing using Artificial Intelligence, capable of carrying out risk assessments of buildings in war and emergency zones following natural disasters. The ability to quickly and safely assess damage to buildings and structures enables humanitarian workers to operate safely and efficiently and protects the civilian population.

The MASAI project partnership is composed of TerrAria S.rl. (coordinator), Gisky and EUCENTRE, with the participation of the Italian Red Cross, and the scientific collaboration of the Politecnico di Torino. The presence of Dr. Daniele Jahier Pagliari and Dr. Matto Risso of the Department of Automatic Control and Computer Science - DAUIN in the MASAI project staff, underlines the importance and the growing impact on civil society of the technological research developed by the Politecnico di Torino.
