Speaker: Francesco Pierri, Politecnico di Milano

Abstract: The rapid rise of generative AI has sparked both widespread excitement and significant concerns. Advances in large language models and the emergence of AI-powered search engines are transforming how information is produced, accessed, and interpreted in digital environments. While these technologies enable powerful applications, including the simulation of complex digital phenomena, they also introduce serious risks such as large-scale misinformation, disinformation campaigns, and targeted attacks. This talk examines these challenges and emphasizes the need to safeguard AI–human interactions online through trustworthy, transparent, and well-governed AI systems.

Bio: Francesco Pierri is an Assistant Professor in the Data Science Lab within the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) at Politecnico di Milano. He is also affiliated with Indiana University Bloomington’s Observatory on Social Media (OSOME) and has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute. His research focuses on Responsible AI at the intersection of artificial intelligence and computational social science, with particular emphasis on how generative AI is reshaping digital ecosystems. He studies misinformation, AI-powered search engines, and human–AI interactions, developing data-driven approaches to support trustworthy and accountable AI-mediated platforms.
