Artificial intelligence is the focus of research at the "ELLIS Unit in Turin," led by Tatiana Tommasi
The ELLIS Turin Unit, established in 2020 as part of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems network, has been officially extended for a new five-year term. The announcement was made recently following a rigorous evaluation process based on criteria such as scientific excellence, critical mass of talent, engagement in the ELLIS PhD program, gender balance, and collaborative capacity within the network, leading to the renewal of 25 ELLIS Units across Europe.
Originally centered at Politecnico di Torino, the unit has progressively established itself as a hub for advanced research in machine learning and intelligent systems, expanding to include the University of Turin and the ISI Foundation, thereby strengthening its collaborative dimension at the local level. The central role of ELLIS in the European AI landscape continues to attract new members and has recently led to the inclusion of Dr. Leonel Rozo (AI4I – Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry) in the Turin Unit, whose expertise in robotics represents a strategic asset for its future activities.
For the Politecnico di Torino the ELLIS Unit in Turin is led by the Vandal research group at DAUIN, under the direction of Tatiana Tommasi. She stated:
«We are extremely proud to be part of the ELLIS network, which is a benchmark for excellence in Artificial Intelligence research in Europe», said the Unit Director, Prof. Tatiana Tommasi. «Our connection with ELLIS contributes to consolidating Turin’s scientific attractiveness and innovation capacity. Looking ahead, our goal is to continue growing by developing new research and training activities in AI, with a particular focus on learning models for autonomous systems that operate in a robust, safe, efficient, and trustworthy manner. We plan to welcome new members and to fully leverage the opportunities offered by the network to promote researcher mobility, foster the creation of competitive consortia for participation in European projects, and support technology transfer.»
Over its first five years of activity, the unit has established a strong profile of international excellence, thanks to its senior members including multiple award-winning ERC grantees, as well as a new generation of researchers: 18 ELLIS PhD students and postdoctoral fellows have been supervised in collaboration with colleagues at leading European universities, achieving outstanding results in terms of publications in top conferences and journals in the field.
