Call for Papers & Abstracts: Special Session CompBioFab 2027 @ BIOSTEC 2027
Submissions are now open for the Special Session CompBioFab 2027 – Intelligent Biofabrication: Models, Data & Reproducible Benchmarks, co-organised by Roberta Bardini of DAUIN and hosted within BIOSTEC 2027, the 20th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies, taking place from 19 to 21 February 2027 in Valletta, Malta.
Biofabrication, the automated generation of functional constructs from cells, biomaterials and bioactive molecules, still relies largely on trial-and-error design, with slow and costly experimental iterations. The session proposes a shift towards model-based, predictive engineering: simulators of cellular behaviour, hybrid multiscale models and digital twins, protocol optimisation, and data-driven approaches able to learn from accumulated evidence. The unifying thread of the initiative is the construction of shared benchmark problems, datasets and evaluation protocols, as a basis for reproducible and cumulative research.
Topics of interest
- Multiscale cellular modelling, from the molecular to the construct scale
- Digital twins and bioreactors: process simulation and control
- Biohybrid robotics: living tissue integrated with synthetic actuation
- Computational and artificial intelligence approaches to protocol design
- Organoids and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)
- Calibration and uncertainty quantification: validating models against experimental data
- Reproducible datasets and benchmarks: shared standards and evaluation protocols
- Sustainable automated workflows: reusable, resource-aware pipelines
Contributions at the intersection of biofabrication, computational modelling, artificial intelligence and experimental validation are welcome, either as full papers or as abstracts.
Deadlines
Submission: 3 December 2026 Notification of acceptance: 21 December 2026 Camera ready: 8 January 2027
Organisation
The session is co-chaired by Roberta Bardini (DAUIN, Politecnico di Torino) together with Laurence Calzone (Institut Curie, Paris), Miriam Filippi (ETH Zurich) and Diana Massai (DIMEAS, Politecnico di Torino).
The initiative is part of the research line on intelligent biofabrication pursued by the SMILIES research group (https://www.smilies.polito.it/), which supported the organisation of the Special Session.
