Robotics and Autonomous Systems with MATLAB and Simulink

Seminar Robotics and Autonomous Systems with MATLAB and Simulink, held by Paolo Panarese and Daniele Sportiello.
The event is organized by MathWorks with the Politecnico di Torino.

When: Monday 4 May at 11,00 am
Where: Conference room "Luigi Ciminiera" (5° floor) - Department of Control and Computer Engineering
Speakers: Paolo Panarese and Daniele Sportiello, MathWorks

Abstract: We will present how MATLAB and Simulink are used across the full lifecycle of robotics and autonomous systems, from early modeling to real‑world deployment. You will see how to:

  • Model robots and sensors, using built‑in libraries, URDF/CAD imports, and physically based simulation with Simscape Multibody.
  • Design autonomous algorithms, covering perception, planning, and control, with examples in AI, SLAM, and reinforcement learning.
  • Simulate and test systems at different levels of fidelity, including physics‑based models, co‑simulation, and integration with external simulators.
  • Work with ROS/ROS 2, both at the algorithm level and using model‑based design to generate ROS nodes.
  • Deploy algocazrithms to real hardware, such as embedded CPUs, GPUs, and NVIDIA Jetson platforms, using automatic code generation.
The goal of the session is to show how a unified, model‑based workflow helps bridge theory and practice, enabling reproducible research, faster experimentation, and a smoother transition from simulation to real robots.
